The stories are amazingly written, even though the Lepralites are imaginary beings, but the troubles and shenanigans they get into are very real and relatable. A Whimsical Adventure of Friendship and Discovery

Written under the collective pseudonym AngJon Hornibrook, two authors—Angele & Jonathan Hornibrook and edited by Deirdre Tobin—Pre-Teen Lepralites is a heartwarming and imaginative collection of stories filled with adventure, humour, and life lessons. The book takes readers into a world where children and magical creatures embark on playful escapades, face thrilling challenges, and learn the values of friendship, trust, and self-discovery.

The narrative blends classic fantasy with the relatable experiences of childhood, creating an engaging mix of adventure and life lessons. Each story introduces unique characters, some human and others magical, as they navigate exciting, sometimes mischievous, situations in nature. Through their playful experiences, they uncover deeper truths about friendship, bravery, and the importance of embracing one’s identity.

One of the standout tales, Let’s Play, sets the tone for the book, drawing readers into a lively and immersive adventure. The story follows Clive and Katie, two adventurous siblings who love playing outdoors with their best friends, Titch-Ella and the blue-haired Hoaby—two playful Lepralites. Their fun takes an exciting turn when they discover an old tire swing hanging from a tree near a stream.

Katie, eager to swing, hops on but soon realizes she has no way to get down. Just as she starts to panic, a mysterious voice booms through the valley. Enter Kaloon, a retired warrior fairy who believes he is helping her by magically pushing the swing. However, his dramatic entrance startles everyone, including Clive’s dog, Cody. Kaloon, full of confidence and boasting about his past adventures, explains that he comes from a place called Dreams.

Kaloon proves to be a fun-loving, well-intentioned character who uses his magic to turn the river into a swirling mudslide—creating the ultimate playground for Clive, Katie, and their magical friends. The story captures the thrill of outdoor play, the joy of making unexpected friends, and the importance of trusting those who might initially seem strange.

Another compelling tale, The Hidden Digger, explores deeper emotional themes through the story of a cat who struggles with fear and self-identity. Unlike most cats, he does not enjoy hunting or killing, yet he feels pressured to act like a predator to fit in. His biggest fear, however, is magpies—black-and-white birds that once terrified him as a kitten. These birds, in his mind, are monstrous and dangerous, and his fear of them has only grown with time.

The cat’s journey is not just about overcoming fear—it is about self-acceptance. He learns that he does not need to hunt or pretend to be like other cats to be valid. His realization that he can exist peacefully in his own way makes for a powerful lesson about embracing individuality. The story beautifully blends emotion and adventure, making it one of the most thoughtful and moving tales in the collection.

A key highlight of Pre-Teen Lepralites is its illustrations, which complement the text. The illustrations serve as a visual gateway into the whimsical world of the Lepralites and their human companions, bringing the characters and their adventures to life.

Each drawing enhances the playful, mystical tone of the stories, helping readers visualize the characters—especially the unique and mischievous Lepralites. The fairy-tale quality of the illustrations aligns well with the book’s themes, capturing the blend of reality and fantasy that defines the narrative.

Beyond aesthetics, the illustrations serve as an engagement tool for young readers, helping them better connect with the characters and events. The balance between text and illustrations creates a reading experience that feels immersive rather than overwhelming, making it an excellent choice for both independent reading and read-aloud sessions.

The dialogue is natural and often playful, giving the characters a distinct personality that feels authentic. The writing balances humour and adventure while weaving in moral lessons without being heavy-handed and the book’s emphasis on outdoor play is particularly refreshing. In an age where digital screens often dominate children’s attention, Pre-Teen Lepralites encourages readers to embrace the joys of nature, friendship, and imagination. The children in the stories don’t rely on technology to entertain themselves—they explore, create, and learn from their surroundings.

With its blend of adventure, magic, and heart-warming themes, this book is sure to capture the imagination of pre-teen readers and make for an excellent read-aloud choice for parents and teachers.

A Magical Tale of Family, Belonging, and the Wonders of the Natural World

A Time for Lepralites by AngJon Hornibrook and Deirdre Tobin is a captivating novel that masterfully blends Irish folklore, family relationships, and the delicate balance between humanity and nature. Set in the picturesque Irish countryside, the story follows Adam McCarthy and his children, Katie and Clive, who rescue two peculiar little beings—Titch-Ella and Hoaby—after finding them trapped in the snow. What starts as an ordinary morning walk soon turns into a life-changing discovery, as the McCarthy family welcomes the Lepralites into their home, unlocking secrets about a hidden world that exists alongside their own.

A World Hidden in Plain Sight

The Lepralites are small, winged creatures with a rich and mysterious culture. Unlike fairies—whom Hoaby insists they are not—they have strong ties to nature, living in harmony with the land. They are watched over by crows, who act as their silent guardians, ensuring their safety from predators and other unseen threats. However, despite their ability to blend into the environment, Titch-Ella and Hoaby’s misadventure in the storm exposes them to humans, leading to an unusual friendship that challenges both worlds’ understanding of one another.

The Lepralites’ world is filled with intriguing characters and customs. One particularly touching subplot follows a Lepralite suffering from hay fever, an affliction that forces him to leave his community. The idea of being separated from one’s kind due to an unavoidable condition is heart-breaking, yet it mirrors real-world issues of displacement and adaptation. His story adds depth to the book’s exploration of change, resilience, and the sacrifices required to find a new home.

Side Adventures with the Owls and Other Mystical Elements

Beyond the central story of Titch-Ella and Hoaby integrating into the McCarthy household, the novel is filled with rich side adventures that enhance its magical charm. One such episode involves an encounter with owls—wise but formidable creatures who play a crucial role in the Lepralite world. The interactions between the Lepralites and the owls reveal a deeper mythology, where different animal species have their own rules and territories. These encounters serve as moments of both danger and revelation, reminding readers that the natural world is as unpredictable as it is beautiful.

A Tale of Family and Belonging

At its core, A Time for Lepralites is a story about family—not just in the traditional sense, but in the way we find connection, even in unexpected places. Katie quickly bonds with the Lepralites, fascinated by their culture and eager to help them. Clive, in his innocent enthusiasm, calls them “fairies” despite Hoaby’s objections, creating lighthearted moments that make their interactions feel organic and heart-warming. Adam, the ever-reliable father, ensures their safety while grappling with the larger implications of their existence.

The novel also explores what it means to belong. For the Lepralites, who are deeply tied to their traditions, the idea of coexisting with humans is both thrilling and unsettling. Through their journey, the book raises thoughtful questions: How much of our identity is shaped by where we come from? Can we truly find home in a new place, even if it means leaving behind what we’ve always known?

Final Thoughts

A Time for Lepralites is a beautifully written tale that balances humour, adventure, and heartfelt emotion. Hornibrook and Tobin have created a world that feels both fantastical and deeply rooted in reality, with characters who are as endearing as they are thought-provoking. The novel’s message about kindness, the importance of preserving nature, and the connections between all living things make it a must-read for fantasy lovers of all ages.

With its rich storytelling, engaging characters, and moments of pure magic, this book is a delightful journey into a world that feels as real as the one outside our windows. Perfect for fans of The Borrowers, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and classic Irish folklore, A Time for Lepralites is a reminder that sometimes, the most extraordinary discoveries happen when we least expect them.

A Lovely Heart-Warming Story - 5 Stars

I absolutely loved this story. I didn't know this author but I am glad I discovered them through a face-book post shared via my friends page. This story follows the McCarthy family as they settle into country life. But it is no ordinary story. They meet some new characters created by this author called Lepralites. I love the concept and the idea. Basically, these Lepralites are tiny creatures that are magical and mystical and are all around us but some are luckier to see them. The book explores, friendships and how past events can influence your current thoughts. The book is a lovely heart-warming read, and has a real touch of Irish humour and character. Their website has lovely sketches and blogs with many more added regularly. I hope these characters get expanded more in the future.

I Commend!

Wow, I just finished checking out your book. You have a perfect book genre I must commend. And with the little I read so far, I know this book will be amazing.  Thank you for sharing!
